Experience The Thrill of Our Proud Heritage

The Bunker Military Museum offers treasures from throughout the past century.

Housed in the original railway station in the once-booming Silver Town of Cobalt, the Bunker is Timiskaming's largest museum. A designated heritage building, the old train station sits on the shore of Cobalt Lake just steps from downtown.

The Bunker's four galleries and military library hold thousands of artifacts. Dozens of handcrafted mannequins wear the uniforms of military men and women from the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War and Vietnam.

From Desert Storm there's an American chemical warfare suit. Just steps away is an air force missile like those used by the Canadian Armed Forces in the Persian Gulf War.

The Bunker's main gallery is spectacular. A mannequin paratrooper hangs from a parachute below a flag-draped ceiling two storeys high. Below, showcases hold war trophies, souvenirs, shoulder patches, photographs and postcards. There are recruitment posters, wartime magazines, K-rations and military shaving kits. In the next gallery both young and old can enjoy the challenge of spotting "the enemy" with an artillery range finder.

The military library has more than 2,000 books and newspaper clippings from World War I to modern days. It's often used by students researching history projects.

Visitors have found a tour of The Bunker a memory- filled nostalgic visit. A quick browse provides an overview of the Museum's treasures, but true history buffs have enjoyed hours, even days, at The Bunker.
